Week 41 – Jazz and Prowl partake of a Gunnison County Airport attraction.

The United States Air Force periodically uses the Gunnison-Crested Butte Airport
for training throughout the year. Any time the big planes put in an appearance over the area you can count on many of the locals heading down to Jorgenson Park – which sits right next to the airport – to enjoy the miniature air show.

Brief Tech Specs for the Gunnison-Crested Butte Airport: Covering 1,600 acres the airport has two runways. The main runway (6/24) is the longest single runway in Colorado and is set on a west-southwest to east-northeast line running nearly parallel to US Hwy. 50. It is 9400 feet (2865 meters) in length, 150 feet (46 meters) wide and is lighted during operational hours. A second unpaved runway (17/35), to due south of the main, is 3000 feet (914 meters) long, 150 feet (46 meters) wide and is open to small aircraft in the summer for daylight use only as it is unlighted – though we have seen the Air Force train with it as well in the summer, actually landing their planes rather than just touch and go.
